Special Features
Introducing
our new Eat Well Guide Manager - Destin Joy
Layne
Please join us in welcoming Destin Joy Layne to the
Sustainable Table Team! Destin comes to us from Wisconsin
where she worked on a new USDA food security measure
that enabled schools and organizations to better assess
the health and food needs of their community. She also
helped establish and teach the first accredited Child
and Family Advocacy Institute program, and worked with
The Wisconsin Connections Guide, an eligibility guide
of economic and nutrition programs.
Through her many roles, including a position in the
music industry, Destin has fully engaged individuals,
organizations, and large institutions through her leadership
style, and is committed to creating positive social
change. And with a passion for healthy food, sustainability,
and community nutrition, it's serendipitous that Destin
connected with the Eat Well Guide!
"I'm very excited about all the updates and changes
we have in store for the Eat Well Guide," said
Destin. "And with all the new features - including
user reviews and new recipes - I promise you will be
too! I'm collaborating with others and working hard
to make sure the Guide is your most reliable resource
for wholesome food in your neighborhood and when you
travel."

Seasonal Recipe - Destin's
Pumpkin Soup
Fall is pumpkin season. Think of autumn's rich colors
and the sweet, earthy flavors of root vegetables.
"This recipe uses some of my favorite vegetables
and spices, and I recommend serving the soup with steamed
kale and brown rice or hearty bread on the side. Pumpkin
soup is a delight to make and your house will be filled
with a wonderful aroma! You shouldn't shy away from
this recipe if you haven't cooked with pumpkin before,
or if you don't have all of the ingredients or spices.
Feel free to adjust the recipe to what you have on hand."

Review - The Complete Organic Pregnancy, By Deirdre Dolan and Alexander Zissu
The Complete Organic Pregnancy is a practical guide
that takes soon-to-be moms by the hand and leads them
to healthy, happy, holistic and all-natural motherhood.
From pre-pregnancy planning and conception, through
three trimesters, labor and the early days of child
rearing, this guide prepares women to clean house in
preparation for their "new tenant," and offers
them knowledge one needs to undertake healthy childbearing.Read

E Coli Outbreak - The Spinach Saga Continues
The E coli outbreak that has turned the stomachs of
spinach-eaters and emptied the wallets of spinach-growers
is bringing a huge amount of media attention to issues
of US food safety. Thus far, the outbreak has killed
one Wisconsin woman and sickened nearly 200 people in
26 states, shining light on the weaknesses and loopholes
within our food system and calling into question the
efficacy of food safety measures. This nationwide outbreak
also exposes some serious problems with our food system
- read
on to find out what they are.

The
Starbucks Campaign's Next Stop: College Campuses
Today, Starbucks is all the rage with the young
adult set, including college students. (Just don't tell
them how many calories those Lattes have!) Additionally,
many college cafeterias are front and center in the
sustainable food movement, with more and more featuring
food from local farmers and instituting policies against
artificial growth hormones in milk. Because of this,
Food & Water Watch's "Hold the Hormones"
Campaign is making an appearance on college campuses.
Food & Water Watch has two goals in reaching out
to college campuses. The first is to get students to
take action on Starbucks' continued use of milk made
with artificial growth hormones. Student activism involves
leafleting a local Starbucks, writing letters, or hosting
a radio program about Starbucks' milk problem. The other
goal is for students to get their administration to
only use rBGH-free milk on campus. To find out more
or get involved, check out: http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/food/dairy/college-campaigns.
And keep your eyes peeled for FWW’s soon-to-be-released
student activist kits!

Internship Opportunities
Eat Well Guide Internship/Externship - Telecommute from Any College Campus in the
United States or Canada
Sustainable Table is seeking college interns/externs
throughout the United States and Canada who are interested
in food issues and would like to increase their research
and marketing skills by helping expand the Eat Well
Guide, an online directory of sustainable food sources.
While most experiences will revolve around updating
and promoting the Guide, this is an awesome opportunity
for interns with a passion for food and health to learn
about new media and explore creative marketing ideas.
Eat Well Guide interns/externs will telecommute from
their home or campus to help bring exposure to small
farmers, retailers, and chefs who are committed to providing
wholesome food from healthy animals. In the process,
interns will gain an exceptional view into the rapidly
increasing sustainable food movement and interact with
fascinating people from all across the U.S. and Canada.
Opportunities to get involved in other facets of Sustainable
Table's projects may also become available for interns,
including outreach and promotional activities for The
Meatrix, and helping with research for our websites.
Interested students should be organized, detail oriented,
conversant in writing and on the telephone, and enjoy
working independently as well as with others. Other
qualifications: College/graduate students who can commit
to a minimum of 10 hours/week for at least three months.
Hours are flexible, but regularity is important. Our
internship is unpaid (credit only), and we will work
with your college to establish the internship and report
on your progress. How to Apply: Please email a cover
letter, writing sample, and resume to info@eatwellguide.org or fax to (212) 726-9160. In either case, please reference
"Eat Well Guide Internship".
